insectarium

insectarium is a dark ambient music project from the United States, created by Joel Hinkle in Springfield, Illinois. Hinkle has been creating ambient music since the late 1990s and developed insectarium in 2010 as a focused outlet for his dark ambient releases. This project is known for its soundscapes that blend elements of dark ambient, drone, world, ritual, and industrial music styles.
The foundation of insectarium’s sound is built using Native Instruments Maschine and Apple Logic, but Hinkle is also known for incorporating a wide range of instruments—from ritual elements like drums, gongs, and Tibetan bowls to didgeridoos, flutes, bowed metal, and noise boxes.
insectarium can be found in various collaborations & compilations. His music has been released on several labels and included as the soundtrack in several documentaries, and in the YouTube series ‘The Sorrow.’ insectarium has been featured on radio programs including SomaFM, Hearts of Space, & Nacht Radio.
